Mood ( literature )

Mood is one element in the narrative structure of a piece of literature.[1] It can also be referred to as atmospherebecause it creates an emotional setting enveloping the reader. Mood is established in order to affect the reader emotionally and psychologically and to provide a feeling for the narrative. It is a complex reading strategy.

Elements of mood

Mood is generally created through several different things. Setting, which provides the physical location of the story, is used in order to create a background in which the story takes place. Different settings can color the mood of a story differently, and usually supports or conflicts with the other content of the story in some way. For example, the desert may be a setting for a cowboy story, and may generate a mood of solitude, desolation, and struggle, among other possible associations. The attitude of thenarrator is another element that helps generate mood. As the reader is dependent on the narrator's perspective of the story, they see the story through their lenses, feeling the way the narrator feels about what happens or what is being described. Embedded in the attitude of a narrator are the feelings and emotions which make it up. A similar element that goes into generating mood is diction, that is, the choice and style of words the writer uses. Diction conveys a sensibility as well as portrays the content of a story in specific colors, thus affecting the way the reader feels about it.

I hate Valentine's day

sigh* I hate Valentines Day. Well, i guess it has some advantages. But.... It's a pain to see all those happy people out there who found their other half. I mean, what are we singles expected to do? Buy ourselves presents? (Although that would be nice, it doesn't feel right.) We girls expect guys to spoil them on V-Day. To buy us pretty things, like chocolates and roses and stuffed bunnies. Something homemade? Even better. A guy can make a single girl happy if he gives her a rose or something. Or even ask them on a date. At least they won't be lonely on V-Day. Gift Suggestion: Chocolate heart with a message with icing. Candlelight dinner. A customized stuffed animal made to match her personality (That's when Build-A-Bear workshop comes in handy :D) Going to the mall while carrying her bags and buying her presents. Anything with lace, hearts, red, velvet, or (depending on the girl) sparkles. A red-velvet cake with her name on it. Cookies that spell out her name. (Extra points- heart shaped cookies) Umm... if your the artsy type, paint her a portait or something red, pink, or roses and hearts. Hmm, I'm out of ideas. Well, I have ideas but they are too big.

26th of May - Lauda Air Flight 004 crashed

Lauda Air Flight 004 was an international passenger flight operated by a Boeing 767-300ER that crashed on 26 May 1991 due to an uncommandedthrust reverser deployment of the No.1 engine in mid-flight, killing all 213 passengers and 10 crew members on board. To date, it remains the deadliest aviation accident involving a Boeing 767 and the deadliest on Thai soil. The crash also marked the aircraft type's first fatal incident and first hull-loss.

It was the third serious accident involving an Austrian aircraft, after the crash in 1960 of an Austrian Airlines and the crash on 23 September 1989 of a Turbo Commander 690 aircraft which claimed the life ofAlfred Dallinger, the Austrian Minister of Social Affairs.

Lauda Air was founded and run by the former Formula One world motor racing champion Niki Lauda. The crash of flight 004 was notable for Lauda's personal involvement in the accident investigation.

Flash Floods in Malaysia

It is common to have floods during the monsoon season. However, when it rains heavily at any other time, there is always one main worry - flash floods! What causes them? Basically, it is a result of too much rainfall and land development. Normally, when it rains in a forested area, most of the rainfall seeps into the soil or is trapped by the plants. Some of it flows into the rivers and streams. So, flooding is less likely to occur as the soil acts as a sponge. However, with development, more concrete structures are constantly being built. When we build more roads and housing estates, the rainwater is prevented from seeping into the ground. In modern houses, the rainwater flows from the roof, into the gutter, and down concrete drains and into rivers. Usually this happens too quickly for the rivers to cope with the sudden rush of water. Besides, many of our rivers contain a lot of silt as a result of land development. This prevents the rivers from carrying away the water quickly, and flash floods occur. Many house owners in the towns and cities cement or tile their front yards. This stops the water seeping into the ground. The Drainage and Irrigation Department director general says , " Studies show that when we have development, the amount of water that reaches the river increases by 190 per cent. It also reaches the river faster." This means that in a city like Kuala Lumpur, millions of litres of water fill up the rivers which will in the end burst their banks and cause more damage. So, what is the solution? We can start by advising people to stop cementing their front yards. Housing developers should build ponds to collect rainwater. They can also build 'earth drains' instead of concrete ones to allow more rainwater to seep into the soil. If more than 100mm of rain falls in an hour, we are likely to experience a flood in some areas. If we are able to channel this water properly, fewer floods would occur.

The Heart of Terry Cottle

Sonny Graham was dying of heart-failure when he got the call about a new heart. Terry Cottle , a recent suicide victim , was the donor. He had shot himself in the throat with a shotgun. After the successful transplant , Sonny found out about Terry being the donor and starting writing to Cheryl , Terry's widow. They ended up getting married. People noticed Sonny taking on some of Cottle's personality and characteristics. He started enjoying things he didnt before , like beer and hotdogs( which were Cottle's favourite food ). It's not uncommon for this to happen with people that get organ transplants.

But 12 years later , Sonny killed himself. He had taken a shotgun to his throat.
